August 2021

In June, a group of 11 ITM Power team members hiked the gruelling Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to fundraise for The Children’s Hospital Charity. The 25 mile hike, saw them climb to the top of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, amassing a total ascent of 1585 meters. Gintas Kacinskas, CAD Engineer explained how at last peak they arrived exhausted and all they could see was “stairs going straight up into the unknown!”

The expedition was conducted on behalf of ITM Nurture – a fundraising initiative within ITM Power that supports local charities and causes in Sheffield. Kath Connell, Head of HR and ITM Nurture Lead said, “we are thrilled with the efforts of our intrepid hikers who represented ITM Power from across the company. They did a fantastic job fundraising and hiking such a long distance. ITM Power match funded what the hikers raised and will continue to promote opportunities to support local charities in the future though our Nurture programme. We look forward to announcing more in the coming months.”

A grand total of £10,511.32 was raised through the collective efforts and is being donated towards the further development of Sheffield Children’s Hospital cancer ward.

Oliver Griffiths, Electrical and Controls Engineer explained how he was thankful for his health and happiness that enabled him to do the challenge, and hoped the team’s “efforts through this challenge can help to improve the health and happiness of others.”

This sentiment was shared with other members of the team. Joseph Woodhead, Apprentice Sub Assembly Technician remarked “it was a great opportunity to push yourself with the motivation of helping out such a worthy cause. It was tough towards the end but the feeling when it was completed was amazing!”

The team ready to head out with fresh legs.

Ruth Jenkinson, Facilities Administrator and hike organiser was grateful for the challenge that enabled her to walk amongst “beautiful scenery as part of a great team whilst raising a substantial amount of money for the Children’s Hospital. The highlight was completing the challenge with the others and being greeted by the support team from ITM who provided us with a well-received picnic!”

Francesco Ghidoni, Process Engineer spoke with pride of a “wonderful opportunity for getting involved in a difficult journey across deep ups and downs, surrounded by wonderful landscapes, driven by a high and noble goal as supporting children hospital” but by all accounts, it took "determination to prove to myself that I would have been able to complete the hard 25 miles path” and Francesco gave “thanks for the support of my incredible team members”.

At ITM Power, we want to thank everyone who donated and supported our walkers’ efforts for such an important and worthwhile cause. We are immensely proud of what was achieved and we look forward to creating more opportunities for team members to support local charities. Go team!

Launch of UK Hydrogen Strategy at Official Opening of Bessemer Park Gigafactory

World’s largest electrolyser factory in Sheffield opened by Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

ITM Power (AIM: ITM), the energy storage and clean fuel company, is pleased to announce that the Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and the Environment today launched the UK Government’s Hydrogen Strategy at an event to officially open ITM Power’s new factory at Bessemer Park in Sheffield.

ITM Power’s Gigafactory, with a capacity of 1,000MW (1GW) of electrolysis equipment per annum, commenced operation in January this year. The site already employs some 320 people with further staff additions planned as the facility ramps up to capacity.   The Company manufactures electrolysers which split water into its constituent molecules of hydrogen and oxygen using renewable power. The resultant zero-carbon green hydrogen can then be used to decarbonise industrial processes, transport and heating and will play a major role in the world’s efforts to arrest climate change.

The announcement of the Government’s Hydrogen Strategy is available at UK government launches plan for a world-leading hydrogen economy - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Business & Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said: “Hydrogen has the potential to provide a third of the UK’s energy in the future. Our first-ever Hydrogen Strategy sets out how we will back this technology, ramp up domestic production and create a new, British industry that will thrive over the next decade and beyond.

“ITM Power is at the forefront of manufacturing green hydrogen and its world-leading technologies are already playing an important role in cutting emissions as the UK moves away from fossil fuels, helping us meet our climate commitments, while creating thousands of high-quality jobs and unlocking billions-of-pounds of private investment.”

Graham Cooley, CEO of ITM Power, added: “We are delighted to have hosted Kwasi Kwarteng to launch the Government’s Hydrogen Strategy and to officially open the Bessemer Park Gigafactory. The Hydrogen Strategy will help British companies become world leaders in decarbonisation technology and equipment. ITM Power is already at the forefront globally of equipment manufacturing to make green hydrogen – the only zero carbon footprint energy gas.”
