Today, mining is responsible for the release of millions of metric tonnes of CO2 annually. Hydrogen offers the mining industry a huge opportunity to decarbonise processes to make them more environmentally friendly and safer. Currently mines rely on diesel for vehicles and backup power generators, and incur large logistical costs for the fuel. There are pressures to use cleaner fuels, but at a large scale and in often very remote areas, this is challenging.
Mines usually operate a 24/7 production cycle, which doesn’t tolerate long charge times, so hydrogen for mining trucks and machinery offers a good rapid-refuelling solution whilst achieving zero emissions in the underground environment. Hydrogen is also a flexible solution which offers an energy source for heating and cooling systems, and as a secondary backup fuel for electricity generation, therefore improving energy security.
